Art gallery and display cases

Many varieties of art are displayed throughout the year in the Benicia Public Library’s “Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Art Gallery”.

The current exhibit is "...and my heart's in the Bay Area" recent paintings by Joanne Corbaley. The show is June 30th and runs through August 4th. The reception will be the evening of Thursday, July 17th from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Joanne will be doing 'Work in Progress' and will be painting in the gallery on Tuesdays, July 8th, 15th and 29th from 10 a.m. to noon and Thursdays, July 10th and 24th from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

There is 1152 sq. ft. of wall space and 2 movable display cases of varying sizes to display art work.

Every fall the Art Gallery Committee meets to decide what projects will be displayed during the year.

Exhibits appear for a period of four to six weeks. Exhibitors are responsible for transportation, installation and removal of exhibits.

Here are some suggestions for shows in the Gallery:

• painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, books (as art objects)
• crafts
• fabric art, weavings, tapestries, textiles
• photography - artistic, historical, natural subjects
• children's art
• collectibles - dolls, miniature books, etc.
• theater art - costumes, scenery, props.
• sculpture - wood, metal. plastics. light & neon
• special themes; competitions
• lapidary, jewelry, metal works
• natural science art & illustrations
• cartooning
• film, video and animation
• folk art
• commercial illustration, graphic design

To enter a project for consideration, pick up a form at the Library during the summer. The deadline for 2008 application is September 1, 2008. Those people or organizations selected for exhibition will be notified by November 30, 2008. The Art Gallery Committee is a subcommittee of the Library Board and it meets the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the Edna Clyne Room except during the summer. The meetings are open to all.
