The focus is on property owner responsibility to reduce the ignition potential of individual buildings and to reduce hazardous vegetation immediately surrounding the building, a concept called the Home Ignition Zone. Participants will receive a Student Workbook, Student Handout with printed slide presentation, 2010 California Building Code Chapter 7A with related regulations, and a Certificate of Attendance with 1.6 CEUs.

Assessing wildfire hazards in the home ignition zone is a 2-day National Fire Protection Association  (NFPA) workshop that provides an understanding of how wildfires threaten buildings, what causes buildings to ignite, and how to reduce the risk of disastrous Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) conflagrations.

The National Firewise Communities program is a multi-agency effort designed to reach beyond the fire service by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, and others in the effort to protect people, property, and natural resources from the risk of wildland fire - before a fire starts. The Firewise Communities approach emphasizes community responsibility for planning in the design of a safe community as well as effective emergency response, and individual responsibility for safer home construction and design, landscaping, and maintenance.
