Becoming a Tutor
All tutoring is done by adult volunteers from the community. Potential tutors receive 13.5 hours of training before being matched with a learner. The training consists of an evening orientation and 2 Saturday sessions, and is offered quarterly.

- The training includes a general orientation to the program and such topics as learning styles, goal setting, reading materials and methods for adults, spelling and writing issues, and ideas for getting started.
- Tutoring pairs meet once or twice a week, for two hours each time, at a time and place convenient to both people.
- Staff support and workshops are available to assist tutors in the use of materials and tutoring methods.
Qualities of a tutor:
- The most important qualities in tutors are having a big heart, being patient, flexible, and supportive of their students as they work toward their goals.

Monthly Tutor Roundtables
Monthly Tutor Roundtable meetings are wonderful opportunities to meet and greet your fellow tutors. Come join us and chat about what's taking place in your tutoring sessions; share your successes, ask and answer questions with one another about what's working for you!

Adult Learner Leadership Institute (ALLI)
Here’s a great training program for adult learners who have demonstrated leadership potential/abilities. This can be someone who is gaining confidence with his or her literacy skills and is ready to take the next step.
Learning to effectively express their thoughts and advocate for themselves and those they care for is a literacy goal common to many adult learners.
The Adult Learner Leadership Institute (ALLI) will help train “learner leaders” who can become excellent advocates as well as serve as mentors to other learners. The Institute is a statewide training program sponsored by the California State Library. The training is spread over six sessions, with classes meeting one Saturday a month and is led, presented and facilitated by adult learners. It is a dynamic training program designed for by adult learners to improve/build self-esteem, leadership, communication, advocacy and presentation skills through practical exercises. So please, take advantage of this great training opportunity for your adult learners! It is FREE and will include breakfast, lunch and training materials.
ALLI will be held one one Saturday per month from January to June at the Benicia Public Library: sessions last from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Learners must commit to all 6 sessions; to apply, download the Learner Application below.

Application for Volunteers
Application for becoming a literacy volunteer are on the city’s Request Partner site. To find the application after clicking on the Request Partner link go to ‘Make a Request’. Click on Literacy radio button and then click on ‘continue’ at the bottom of the page. Click on Literacy Volunteer radio button and again on ‘continue’. That will take you to the form to fill out.
